Journal Entry   Back KODIAK: Alaska Magazine Hails Refuge's River Management Alaska Region, September 26, 2005 Print Friendly Version ?After years of dreaming, I am fishing the Ayakulik River?.? Author Les Palmer starts his August 2005 article ?Rules of the Game? about his experiences on the Ayakulik River in Kodiak Refuge. He goes on to compare alternative strategies used by land managers to keep the Ayakulik, Gulkana and Brooks rivers unspoiled. Much of the veteran Alaska Magazine writer's description of the Ayakulik is devoted to the effectiveness of voluntary use guidelines in managing perceived crowding. Developed by a local stakeholder group at the request of the Refuge, these guidelines have been tested through two seasons of use and evaluated by a cooperative creel census and exit survey conducted by Refuge and Alaska Department of Fish and Game staff. The stakeholder group continues to meet annually to evaluate use of the river, and in 2005 the State Board of Game passed a resolution in support of the management strategy.
