Silvio O. Conte Refuge Intern Provides Spanish Interpretive Materials
Northeast Region, September 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
In an effort to reach out to Hispanic audiences in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts, Alex Wand hs made it his special project to translate an audio-tour of the Great Falls Discovery Center and a fact sheet about the invasive plant water chestnut into Spanish. Alex, a sophomore from the University of Michigan, spent his summer as an ?eco-intern? at the refuge, working on outreach at the center as well as experiencing invasive plant control, endangered species work, bird-banding, and bird counts.

Alex's ability to speak and write fluent Spanish and his background in music made this project the perfect one for him. In addition to translating the audio-tour into text, he is planning to record the tour in English and in Spanish in a state-of-the-art recording studio to which he has access. His efforts will be appreciated by hundreds of future Spanish-speaking residents from the nearby cities of Holyoke and Springfield, as well as vision-impaired visitors, who will now be able to listen to a description of the exhibits they are visiting instead of having to rely on the exhibit's English text panels.
