TETLIN: Fire Burn Severity Project Completed
Alaska Region, July 15, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Tetlin Refuge, designated as the Land Management Research Demonstration (LMRD) Area for fire ecology in the boreal forest, recently completed the second year of field work mapping the Composite Burn Index of the 2003 Black Hills Fire. Volunteers from the Student Conservation Association donned hip waders and field vests to trek into the remote burn site. They assisted in collecting data on the effects of differing burn severity on the landscape, which is in the process of being analyzed. This information will be used for designing future studies in the area and as a tool in understanding the ecology of fire in the boreal forest.
