Irving Mill Dam Removal
Northeast Region, December 28, 2004
Print Friendly Version
This project restored a stretch of Ridley Creek, in Pennsylvania, a tribuatry to the Delaware, through dam removal, riparian restoration and juvenile fish stocking. The creek's first blockage, a 12-foot high, 100-foot wide dam known as the Irving Mill Dam was removed, to the historic streambed, and in-stream and riparian habitat restoration activities were conducted. The dam was in an advanced state of disrepair, and the stream was already eroding around the east abutment of the dam. Removal of this first dam on Ridley Creek will have multiple benefits, including: 1) restoration of unrestricted fish passage foranadromous fish, including, American and Hickory shad, alewive, blueback herring and of resident fish ; 2) restoration of stream habitat and organisms associated with it; 3) elimination of a public safety hazard, and 4) elimination of dam owner liability. In addition, project proponents believe that removal of the first dam will generate enthusiasm and momentum for subsequent removals or fish-passage retrofittings on the remaining dams along Ridley Creek.
