Wyomissing Creek Restoration Project
Northeast Region, October 18, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Two dams were removed on Wyomissing Creek, a tributary to the Schuykill River, in Reading, Pa., adjacent to the Reading Public Musuem. This project had multiple objectives including: removal of two low head dams; stream channel restoration and enhanced sediment transport capability through restored fluvial geo-morphological processes; stream bank stabilization; riparian vegetation restoration; fish habitat enhancement, unrestricted fish passage, water quality enhancement, wetland restoration; stream natural biodiversity and ecosystem restoration, elimination of nuisance waterfowl; and development of public natural area/park with emphasis on natural resource education and recreation. The project involved a multi-disciplinary approach to restore natural riverine functions and habitat in an attempt to revitalize a public area that was an historic focal point for the Museum and the City of Reading.
