Georgetown County campers encounter Waccamaw wildlife

The race was on. Children laughed and clapped, cheering the box turtle and yellow-bellied slider on. These turtles were part of the summer wetlands program presented by Waccamaw refuge staff and its friends group, the SEWEE association. Georgetown YMCA and Georgetown Presbyterian Day Care campers learned first-hand about habitat needs and feeding habits of reptiles such as turtles and alligators commonly found in the Georgetown County wetlands. The environmental education outreach program at Waccamaw NWR reaches pre-K to middle school children from day care centers, camps and public schools. Children learn about the natural areas where they live and also gain awareness of the purposes of Waccamaw Refuge and its important role in their community
