Federally-threatened beetle found at Plum Tree Island Refuge
Northeast Region, July 27, 2005
Print Friendly Version
In July 2005, a cross-program team of Fish and Wildlife Service staff and a biologist from the City of Hampton discovered a small population of Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetles living on Plum Tree Island NWR in Poquoson, Virginia. Over the past several years, a build up of sand on the southern end of this former bombing range turned wildlife refuge, created ideal habitat for this rare insect. Due to the presence of unexploded munitions, the refuge is closed to all public use. The survey team used a route previously determined as safe by the Army Corps of Engineers to gain access to the area where the beetles were discovered.
