ARCTIC, KANUTI and YUKON FLATS: Most Northern Interpretive Center in the US Reaches New Heights
Alaska Region, September 14, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Listening to the ?oohs? and ?ahs? as visitors enter the stunning Arctic Interagency Visitor Center (AIVC) located along the Dalton Highway, 250 miles north of Fairbanks, it's no wonder this new facility won a 2005 Media Competition Award from the National Association of Interpretation (NAI). Working together, the Bureau of Land Management, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve and the Arctic, Kanuti and Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuges have reached great heights with the interpretive exhibits that welcome visitors to the cooperatively managed interagency facility. The AIVC boasts a wide variety of displays that center around the crowning exhibit ? a captivating globe of the northern hemisphere. Other exhibits include live arctic tundra plants; wolverine, lynx and Dall sheep mounts; and interpretive panels that enlighten visitors with a better understanding and appreciation of the Arctic and its unique resources. The layout of these exhibits invites people to explore and encourages them to linger.

Each year, the NAI selects just three exemplary exhibits from around the nation to receive this award. This year the most northern interpretive center in the United States joins the high ranks of others receiving this prestigious award. The AIVC exhibits? ranking within the selected 2005 exhibits will be announced at the November NAI conference in Mobile, Alabama. We?re all anxious to find out if this tucked away interpretive haven takes first, second or third place!
