KENAI: Officer Assists in Hurricane Disaster Relief Work
Alaska Region, September 7, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Officer Chris Johnson responded to a request for help in coastal Louisiana following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Officer Johnson joined other federal law enforcement officers as part of a special operations response team. Teamed with another officer, Johnson spent the first few days picking up survivors from roof tops and debris using an airboat. Efforts will soon transition to door-to-door searches of flooded buildings to recover those who did not survive the disaster. Along with caring for many thousands of people without food, water, and medicine - law enforcement officers have had to address significant concerns with looting, shootings, and gang related activity. The response team activity is expected to be prolonged for weeks, with full recovery to the area to take many years and billions of dollars.
