KENAI: Refuge K-9 Certified in Wildlife Detection
Alaska Region, September 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge's canine helper, Sampson, was recently certified in wildlife detection of six Alaska wildlife species: caribou, moose, deer, mountain goat, and brown and black bear. The black lab can now accurately complete searches for illegally taken game, including parts and associated evidence (such as bloodied meat bags) in buildings, packages, and in the open field. Sampson has already proven himself as a good addition to the Refuge's law enforcement efforts and his new training is expected to pay further dividends. Additional certification in tracking will be sought next year to round out the training so that Sampson can accomplish search and rescue activities or search for suspects.
