KENAI: Big Indian Creek Cabin Added to Reservation Program
Alaska Region, September 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge completed construction of a third and final cabin this summer, the Big Indian Creek Cabin, located near the end of Mystery Creek Road. The cabin is a unique addition to the Refuge's public use cabin program. The 16' X 16' structure was rebuilt from a cabin ruin located along Little Indian Creek, moved to a more accessible location, and reconstructed in a manner that preserved its historical features. While the Refuge had previously restored historical cabins, this is the first time a structure that would have otherwise been lost has been used to recreate a useable cabin and retain much of its history. The cabin is also located near the Big Indian Creek airstrip (which was built during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline/ENSTAR natural gas pipeline) making this the only Refuge public use cabin accessible by wheeled airplane. Seasonal access is also available via four-wheel drive vehicle or snowmachine along the Mystery Creek Road. For more information about this cabin, or the Refuge cabin program, go to http://kenai.fws.gov/ or call the Refuge at (907) 262-7021.
