KENAI: Graduate Students Further Monitoring Efforts
Alaska Region, September 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is developing long-term ecological monitoring programs with the assistance of three graduate students. These efforts help meet Refuge purposes to conserve fish and wildlife and habitats and provide for research and land management training opportunities. The students include Dawn Magness, a PhD candidate at the University of Alaska - Fairbanks (UAF), helping model bird distributions on a landscape level; Matt Bowser, a MS candidate at UAF working on insect taxonomy and monitoring; and Andy Baltensperger, a MS candidate at Colorado State University. Andy's project is focused on marten ecology, but will also help develop aerial digital videography methodologies for assessing winter distribution of many Refuge mammals. The efforts provide a cost-effective way to complete critical biological work on the Refuge while helping also to train wildlife biologists and land managers of the future.
