Natives of Larson Bay were awarded $59,000 for an ambitious project involving the Karluk watershed (including Larson Bay.) Much of the land in this area is covered by a Conservation Easement between the Refuge and Koniag, Inc., the regional Native corporation. Their proposal calls for acquisition of high resolution digital photos for the study area; GIS training for tribal personnel; and applying these to a range of cooperative projects with Kodiak Refuge. The list of candidate projects ranges from mapping subsistence harvest areas to evaluating brown bear distribution and other projects all focused on promoting tribal involvement in management of the Koniag Conservation Easement while improving fish, wildlife and habitat management.
