KODIAK: Harlequin Surveys Show Little Change
Alaska Region, August 30, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kodiak Refuge staff completed the 2005 coastal harlequin duck survey and banding in August, 2005. Staff surveyed more than 400 miles of Refuge shoreline in Uyak and Uganik Bays and the Afognak Island unit and tallied more than 2,900 molting harlequin ducks. Densities remain stable from the 1994-1997 average density of approximately 5.5 to 6.0 (ducks/km of shore) in Uganik and Afognak survey areas but continued downward in Uyak. The Uyak harlequin duck density declined from a 1994-1997 average of 6.75 to 2.77 in 2004 and dropped further to 2.54 in 2005. A total of 95 molting harlequin ducks were captured and 91 banded in the three survey areas (67 males; 28 females.) Capture success was greatest in Uyak with 63 ducks caught in two different drives and 60 of these banded. Six of the 63 were recaptures, with one of the recaptures having been caught in the original Refuge harlequin duck capture conducted in August, 1996, nine years to the day from the 2005 effort. All other Uyak recaptures were banded in the same trapping area with two ducks recaptured from 1999 and two more from 2004 capture drives.

No recaptures were made in the other two survey areas with 22 harlequins captured (21 banded) in Uganik and 10 captured and banded in the Afognak unit. All banded ducks were also sampled for avian influenza.
