KENAI: Nature Programs a Success
Alaska Region, August 25, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge enjoyed increased visitation and participation in its summer nature programs in 2005. The Refuge conducted discovery hikes, nature walks, and daily film presentations at its headquarters in Soldotna. In addition, 470 people participated in campfire programs held at Refuge campgrounds during the summer. The nature walks were especially popular, and four different guided tours were conducted on the Refuge's Keen-Eye Trail: 1) "Go Wild" - experience how wild animals use their senses and special adaptations to survive in the natural world, 2) "Pioneering the Kenai Peninsula" - discover why people immigrated to the Kenai Peninsula over a century ago through learning about the life of Andrew Berg, Alaska's first registered big game guide, 3) "From Your Home to Theirs" - as you leave the world you know, discover the fascinating homes of wildlife living in the forests, wetlands, and lakes of the Kenai Peninsula, and 4) "Time Travel through the Taiga" - take a walk back in time and see how plant and animal life changes in the boreal forest and imagine how it may be transformed in the future. The last nature walk of the season, "Time Travel through the Taiga" is scheduled for August 27 at 2 pm. Refuge nature programs after that time will focus on community school groups until the next summer season.
