Alaska Hosts Refuge Association Board of Directors
Alaska Region, August 21, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The National Wildlife Refuge Association (NWRA) Board's first meeting in Alaska convened at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, home of Alaska Maritime Refuge. After an opening day focused on learning about Alaska issues including invasive species, oil spills, land exchanges, Friends initiatives and budget shortfalls, Board members finished their business in Homer with a community reception organized by Alaska's NWRA Board representative and former Alaska Maritime Refuge Manager, John Martin. Concluding their business in Homer, Board members traveled 75 miles down the road to visit Kenai Refuge, which hosted the Board on Sunday August 21.

The NWRA Board represents various interests and comes from all across the U.S. They were given a tour of Kenai Refuge headquarters in Soldotna, the Russian River area, Skilak Loop Special Management Area, and treated to a salmon barbecue prepared by Refuge staff. The National Wildlife Refuge Association, established in 1975, is the only organization whose sole mission is dedicated to protecting, enhancing, and expanding the National Wildlife Refuge System. Efforts by the Association have been instrumental in many ways to help the System, including working with partners to establish a network of 220 refuge Friends groups made up of approximately 45,000 refuge volunteers across the Country.
