VAFO Discovers Two New Populations of Federally-listed Fish
Northeast Region, August 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Two new populations of the federally endangered Roanoke logperch (Percina rex) have been discovered. Until 2004, a major portion of what is believed to be the historic range of this species had not been surveyed. The surveyed area includes the mainstem Roanoke River and its tributaries, located between two large dams in southern Virginia in the Roanoke-Tar-Neuse-Cape Fear Ecosystem. In the summer of 2004 and 2005, the Roanoke logperch was discovered in adjacent tributaries to the Roanoke River. Due to these findings, intensified surveys in this portion of the historic range will be conducted in the future. To conduct these surveys, the Virginia Field Office (VAFO) has worked closely with partners including the Virginia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, and Virginia Tech. VAFO is currently working with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and American Electric to fund additional surveys in 2006 and 2007.
