KENAI: Anchorage Man Charged in Bear Killing
Alaska Region, August 10, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Officers and Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agents filed a charging document August 10, 2005 for the alleged shooting of a female brown bear on July 31, 2005 on the Refuge near the Russian River. The bear was found dead on August 2, along with three orphaned cubs. Information collected and interviews conducted the day of the shooting by Refuge Officer Clayton McDermott quickly lead officers to a suspect, an Anchorage resident who had been fishing in the area the day of the shooting. After officers completed the investigation, the suspect was charged with six counts: take of a brown bear in a closed area, take of a brown bear in a closed season, take of a female bear with cub, failure to salvage the hide and skull of a brown bear, hunting brown bear without the proper tag, and reckless endangerment. The suspect has been summoned to appear before the District Court of Alaska on August 30 to answer the charges.
