Genoa National Fish Hatchery Offers New Self-Guided Walking Tour for Visitors
Midwest Region, August 10, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Staff at Genoa National Fish Hatchery, Genoa, Wis., developed a self-guided walking tour of the hatchery designed to help visitors learn more about the hatchery. The tour features 12 numbered stops, each presenting information about the hatchery's history, purpose, or ongoing restoration programs.

One of the restoration projects highlighted on the tour includes lake sturgeon production for restoration in Legend Lake, Wis., the Red River watershed in Minnesota, and the Mississippi River. The tour takes visitors through the sturgeon culture building and other facilities throughout the hatchery. Along the way, visitors can talk with hatchery staff as they conduct their work at the hatchery. The 1.5 mile trail also takes visitors through natural areas of the hatchery groups where they can observe plants and wildlife. The trail features information about the various habitats available for wildlife interspersed with the hatchery's ponds and culture buildings.

Genoa NFH is set in The Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Refuge and provides plenty of natural habitats for wild birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Visitors taking the tour can spend as much time as they choose viewing wildlife and plants, or observing freshwater fish and mussel culture operations. The walking tour provides an exciting opportunity for the public to visit the facilities and learn what goals Genoa NFH is working to accomplish.
