Book Reading

This summer, Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge continued it's partnership with the Boundary County Public Library for their ?Camp-Read-Alot? Summer Reading Program. Refuge staff along with the Refuge's Youth Conservation Corps provided two interpretive programs at the Library. The first program was entitled ?Migratory Waterfowl: Where Did They Go? and included waterfowl identification, making homemade binoculars, and waterfowl mobiles. The 11-minute video ?America's National Wildlife Refuge System: Where Wildlife Comes First? was also shown to the group.

The second program entitled ?Antlers and Hooves? provided a hands-on introduction to various animal antlers and hooves, making plaster casts of various animal tracks, coloring animal cutouts and making mobiles.

?Camp-Read-A lot's? finale was held at the Refuge and included numerous activities such as two book readings, ?There Was An Old Women Who Swallowed A ...? play highlighting wildlife seen on the Refuge, making trail mix, constructing bird houses and bird feeders, making plaster casts of animal tracks, and book giveaways. The Summer Reading Program has been an excellent partnership between the Boundary County Library, Valley View School, and Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge and will continue for years to come.
