Assistant Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett Tours Partnership Projects at Iroquois Refuge
Northeast Region, August 3, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Assistant Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett toured the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge on August 3, 2005, with a focus on in-progress partnership projects.

The Mohawk/Oneida Pool Rehabilation Project involves the enhancement of wetland quality and management of 2,200 acres through the construction of 23,000 feet of dike, installing five water control structures, and ditch rehabilitiation. This is a major partnership with Ducks Unlimited, which is handling the project's engineering and contracting. Estimated costs is over $1.5 million.

The Swallow Hollow Nature Trail is 1.3 miles long and includes approximately 2,600 feet of elevated boardwalk. The trail and boardwalk meanders through a variety of habitats like emergent marsh, wooded wetlands, and uplands. The trail was closed down several years ago to public access due to unsafe structural conditions. The rehabilitation of the trail is a cooperative effort with the Friends of Iroquois NWR, Inc., Iroquois Job Corps Center, and refuge volunteers. The estimated cost is over $700,000.

Representatives for our partners were on hand to meet and discuss the projects with Assistant Secretary Scarlett. These included representatives from Ducks Unlimited, Friends of Iroquois NWR, Inc., Iroquois Job Corps Center and refuge volunteers. Assistant Secretary Scarlett also talked with all of the Iroquois Job Corps students involved on the Swallow Hollow Nature Trail project.
