KENAI: Environmental Assessment Completed for Fisheries Project
Alaska Region, August 2, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has completed an Environmental Assessment, in cooperation with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, to evaluate their request to take additional sockeye salmon eggs from Hidden Lake within the Refuge. A Finding of ?No Significant Impact? was signed by Regional Director Rowan Gould on August 2, 2005. The Assessment addresses the need and environmental consequences of the additional egg take which has been requested to replace brood stock lost due to recent Court action in the Tustumena Lake decision of The Wilderness Society; "Alaska Center for the Environment v. the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service." The Hidden Lake Sockeye Salmon Enhancement Project has been operated for approximately 29 years and currently allows the take of approximately 660 adult salmon to produce 800,000 eggs. The requested amendment would allow the take of an additional 4,000 fish and 5 million eggs for approximately 5 years. A copy of the Assessment may be obtained by contacting the Refuge at (907) 262-7021.
