Journal Entry   Back CCESFO Announces 11-Acre Oyster Reef Construction in Lavaca Bay, TX Accomplished by NRDAR Trustees Southwest Region, June 30, 2005 Print Friendly Version An 11-acre oyster reef construction was recently completed in Lavaca Bay near the mouth of Keller Bay. The reef is part of a Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) restoration settlement that provides compensation for lost ecological services related to the release of hazardous material from the Alcoa Aluminum facility at Point Comfort. Natural Resource Damage Assessment Restoration (NRDAR) Trustees include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Texas Council on Environmental Quality, Texas General Land Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the Fish and Wildlife Service, represented by Ken Rice, staff biologist from the Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Station (CCESFO). The reef was completed in early May, one month ahead of schedule, in time for oyster spat to begin attachment on rock laid down on the bay bottom during reef construction. Preliminary sampling in June on the reef, six weeks after construction, indicates a very successful spat set has occurred. In addition to oyster production, the reef will provide aquatic habit to numerous marine fish and invertebrate. NRDAR biologists will continue to monitor the success of the reef for the next several years.
