Journal Entry   Back KENAI: New Public Use Cabin Offers Easy Access and Wilderness Atmosphere Alaska Region, July 16, 2005 Print Friendly Version Kenai National Wildlife Refuge staff have put the finishing touches on a new public use cabin located at Engineer Lake within the popular Skilak Loop Special Management Area. The log cabin will join 10 other public use cabins in the Refuge's new cabin program. The Refuge chose Engineer Lake as a new cabin site because of its location. It is relatively accessible (by car from the Sterling Highway) and still has a remote wilderness-like setting. The Lake also provides year-round fishing opportunities as well as great wildlife viewing. The cabin will be added to the Refuge's reservation system later this year after a trail has been completed connecting the Seven Lakes Trail to the new cabin site. Total hiking distance from the Engineering Lake Campground parking area to the new cabin should be just under one mile.
