Workshops sponsored by Friends Group
Southwest Region, May 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Spring of 2005 marked a successful season of workshops sponsored by the Friends of Buenos Aires NWR at the Environmental Education Center in Brown Canyon. On April 9, youngsters and their parents enjoyed the Mystery Family Weekend, taught by educator Beth Phillips. In a range of field activities, the group studied insects, aquatic creatures, bird identification, and animal tracking. Puppet shows and story-telling rounded out a fun and educational sojourn. During the last weekend of April, the Nature Photography Workshop was directed by Friends member Bob Farrell, retired biologist and award-winning nature photographer. Participants learned about techniques of composition, lighting, and equipment handling, with the beautiful scenery of Brown Canyon as inspiring subject material. Memorial Day weekend featured an Astronomy Workshop taught by Richard Barchfield of Kitt Peak National Observatory. Despite an overcast sky, participants benefited from the very informative lectures and slide presentation, and had fun observing the sun with the solar telescope during the sunny daytime.
