Heinz Refuge Hosts Pathways to Fishing
Northeast Region, May 28, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The John Heinz NWR at Tinicum held its annual "Pathways to Fishinig" event on May 28, 2005. A total of 52 participants registered with just about an even split of those coming from both Delaware and Philadelphia Counties. The refuge is shared by both. According to Pathways Coordinator, Bill Thomas, over half the participants had never been fishing before. Most had found out about the event through press releases that ran in local newspapers. Others found out through the refuge website and by flyers in the visitor center. Thomas noted that a variety of fish were caught including yellow perch, channel catfish, pumpkinseed, and a two and a half pound large mouth bass caught by a 5 year old that turned out to be the largest of the day. Fishing equipment was provided to those who did not have their own and a wide variety of special gifts and prizes were given out including coupon books, fishing ID guides, snacks, and polaroid pictures to anglers with their catches. Thomas indicated that many refuge partners were involved with the event including the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Wal-Mart, Taylors Bait and Tackle from southwest Philadelphia, Southeast Archery, and the Friends of the Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum and its Photo Group.
