KENAI: President and Mrs. Carter Visit Refuge
Alaska Region, July 9, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge was honored to host former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter for two days of fishing, birding, and relaxation. The President traveled to Kenai after serving as keynote speaker at an Anchorage event attended by some 900 guests celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) signed by President Carter in 1980. Among its accomplishments, ANILCA created 9 new national wildlife refuges and expanded 7, including Kenai, while designating 1.3 million acres of the Refuge as Wilderness. It was fitting that 25 years later President Carter and Rosalynn would spend their 59th wedding anniversary within the Wilderness area he established. The Carters enjoyed their visit and the President spoke fondly to Refuge staff about the Refuge, its wildlife and wilderness, and was especially pleased with the fish he caught!
