Live sea lampreys attract lots of attention at Voices of the Lake Festival
Northeast Region, June 26, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was one of 25 agencies and organizations providing information at the Voices of the Lake festival at the ECHO (ecology, culture, history, opportunity) aquarium and science center at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain on June 25 and 26. The Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Resources Office and the White River National Fish Hatchery brought live sea lamprey and live Atlantic salmon to ECHO. The sea lamprey not only proved a popular attraction, but also prompted a number of important discussions about this species and its effects in the lake.

The festival also encouraged visitors and residents to explore Lake Champlain science issues. In addition to the eco-booths, which included our lamprey and salmon display, several roundtable discussions allowed visitors and scientists to express opinions using ECHO's instantaneous electronic Personal Response System. The icing on the cake was appearances by Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle, Vermont Governor Jim Douglas and other influential people at this excellent event!
