Journal Entry   Back New Mexico Youth Study Dexter NFH & TC Southwest Region, June 30, 2005 Print Friendly Version For a second year, Dexter National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center collaborated with New Mexico MESA, Inc. (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), to conduct a summer youth environmental education program. For three days, 17 middle and high school students from Roswell, New Mexico, were challenged to conduct accurate environmental evaluations at two wetland sites on the facility. They took physical measurements, conducted water quality analyses, identified macro-invertebrates, qualified animal diversity and noted vegetation types at each site. Back in their classroom, they collated and graphed the data for a presentation they will make at the final Student Ecology Research Program (SERP) Congress to be held in Albuquerque at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) on July 30. At the Congress, they will share their project with other student teams from other areas of the state. The information they gathered will also be used by Dexter st aff to monitor changes in facility wetland ecosystems over time. Instructors included John Vigil and Juanita Vigil, both teachers at Mesa Middle School in Roswell, and Jason Radler, Mark Vallejos, and Jennifer Richter from the NMMNHS. NM MESA, Inc., in partnership with NMMNHS seeks out opportunities to expose college bound students of historically under represented ethnic groups to a variety of scientific disciplines. Jen Jackson from KBIM, the CBS affiliate in Roswell, covered the students in action and the video was televised on the local evening news. Bitter Lake NWR loaned Dexter a van to shuttle students around to the sites, thank you Bitter Lake.
