Lake Lowell Litter Lift participants gather nearly half a ton of garbage
Pacific Region, April 23, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Litter's not for Critters, so 25 volunteers and refuge staff celebrated Earth Day 2005 by gathering nearly half a ton of garbage at the Lake Lowell Sector of Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. With over 100,000 annual visitors, unfortunately the refuge has an ongoing litter problem.

To help address that problem, the Litter Lift kicked off the new Refuge Helpers Litter Control program. Modeled after Adopt-a-Highway programs, groups, families, or individuals that become Refuge Helpers will adopt a portion of the refuge and commit to keeping it litter-free by collecting litter two to five times per year.

The Litter Lift and the Refuge Helpers Litter Control program were instigated by refuge volunteer Kris Horton.
