Lower Sussex Bassmasters Partners with Prime Hook NWR Walmart to Host Youth Fishing Tournament
Northeast Region, June 4, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On Saturday, June 4, 2005, 194 children up to age 15 participated in the 16th Annual Lower Sussex Bassmasters Youth Fishing Tournament at the Municipal Park in Milton to kick off National Fishing and Boating Week. This was their biggest tournament ever! The event was sponsored by over 100 organizations and featured free hot dogs, soda, bait, hooks, and train rides from the Milton Lions Club. The children caught a variety of fish including bluegills, bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and eels. Every child received a prize and a bag with an assortment of hooks, sinkers, bobbers, lures, coloring books on fishing and water pollution, etc. Everyone had a wonderful time! Total attendance was estimated at 500 people. In a partnership between the Lower Sussex Bassmasters, Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), and Walmart, the goal of this annual one-day fishing derby on the upper Broadkill River was to promote the recreation of fishing. The kids learned about information on the life history of native fish species at our touch tank, the art of fish printing, and a new appreciation for the recreation of fishing. Several organizations participated including the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife, Friends of Prime Hook NWR, Prime Hook NWR, OC104-FM, and Banana Boat Sun Tan Lotion.
