George Black (Professor at Tulsa Community College) and eight students visited the refuge on June 24, 2005. The ecology class was learning about the various habitat types found throughout the state, and wanted to visit the refuge to learn about the largest remaining intact bottomland hardwood forest in the state. The students were able to see and explore the oxbow lakes, cypress sloughs, and managed wetlands on the refuge. For several of the students, it was their first experience in a bottomland hardwood forest.
