KENAI: Highway Funds Improve Recreation Access
Alaska Region, June 17, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Visitors to Swanson River and Swan Lake Roads within Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will notice improvements to 19 sites, including improvements to 15 trailheads, Rainbow Lake Campground, and 3 boat ramps. Designated parking sites have approximately doubled and 4 new concrete toilets have been installed. Additionally, 4 new facilities have been constructed including an informational pull-off near Sunken Island Lake Road, a new parking area at the Swanson River Landing, and a scenic overlook and observation deck off Swan Lake Road. A trail, accessible to people with disabilities, was also constructed to Mosquito Lake. In total, visitor facility improvements cost approximately $1 million and took two years to complete. D&L Construction, a local Kenai Peninsula contractor, completed the work. Funding for the project came primarily from Federal Highway funds designated for road and trail improvements on national wildlife refuges.
