Albion Central School fifh-grade class presents Iroquois refuge wetland panel
Northeast Region, June 16, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On June 16, the Albion Central School fifth-grade class presented an interpretive panel, "What Every Kid Should Know About Wetlands," to the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Swallow Hollow Trail project. The ceremony featured Project Beginnings, What We Learned, What We Did for our Project, Our Letters to the Editor, the Panel Unveiling, and Thank You's.

The class goals were to learn about the history of wetlands and the animals associated with the habitat, how to identify wetland areas, why wetlands are important to us, and what we can do to help keep the nation's wetlands. The end result was a fabulous interpretive panel presented to the refuge to convey those messages, especially to other kids.

Approximately 40 students in two classes worked on the project over a three-week period, researching wetlands, deciding with their teachers what information to present, and discussing the wording, layout and colors with Lonowood Art Company, the fabricater of the panel. A New York State Learn and Serve America Grant for Albion Central School provided funding for the panel, field trips to the refuge, and the unveiling ceremeony at the refuge.
