Journal Entry   Back Ornithology Tour Advances Knowledge of the Columbia Bottomlands Forests Southwest Region, May 19, 2005 Print Friendly Version David Rosen from the Clear Lake Field Office, and Mike Lange from the Texas Mid-Coast NWR Complex led a field trip for an ornithology class from Texas A&M University at Galveston. Dr. Susan Knock, along with seventeen graduate and undergraduate students, toured the Dance Bayou Unit, a 650-acre old growth Columbia Bottomland Forest preserve administered by the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. Mike Lange introduced students to the regional importance of the Columbia Bottomlands for Nearctic-Neotropical migrant landbird conservation, and detailed current projects and land acquisition under the Austin's Woods Conservation Plan. David Rosen covered topics in forest community dynamics and structure and plant diversity. Students had the opportunity to perform point counts in several different habitats throughout the unit, practice identification skills of forest birds by sight and sound, and learn to identify a number of important bottomland forest plant species.
