Print Friendly Version
Klamath Basin NWRC fire managers successfully treated more than 30,000 acres of refuge lands with prescribed fire. Beginning October 2004, fire crews treated 33,993.1 acres in a combination of marsh, upland and leaseland farm field units at Tule Lake NWR, Lower Klamath NWR, Bear Valley NWR and Modoc NWR. Refuge managers utilize prescribed fire as a primary habitat maintenance and enhancement tool throughout the Complex, especially in the areas of invasive plant species control, waterfowl nesting area improvements and noxius weed control. A unique leaseland farming program at Tule Lake and Lower Klamath NWR's is greatly supplemented by fire managements active role in agricultural debris removal through the application of prescribed fire. Fire managers continued their commitment and ability to provide near same-day service as farmers requested their leased fields burned. As a prescribed fire treatment leader in the west, Klamath Basin Fire Management is actively engaged in prescribed fire treatments from late September through early June. During the summer months, fire crews are involved in fire suppression activities nationwide. The Complex averages three to four fires on refuge lands per year. Klamath Basin NWRC Fire Management provides wildland fire suppresion, prescribed fire and fuels management services to the Complex's six component wildlife refuges in California (Tule Lake NWR, Lower Klamath NWR, Clear Lake NWR)and Oregon (Upper Klamath NWR, Bear Valley NWR and Klamath Marsh NWR), as well as Modoc NWR and Humboldt Bay NWRC, also in northern California.
