Career Day at Dexter Middle School
Southwest Region, May 19, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Dave Hampton, Fishery Biologist, Dexter National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center (Center), was invited to participate in Career Day at the local middle school in Dexter, New Mexico. Working with teenagers can be intimidating, especially when there are 100 of them, but Dave and his never ending knowledge looked at this adventure as a way to shape young minds. On May 19, 2005, Dave, along with several local professionals, held 4 sessions lasting 45 minutes each with 25 students in each class. He shared success stories, ensured they knew what a habitat was, what the words extinct and threatened meant, what it meant to conserve fish and wildlife, the importance of protecting our environment, and how the Center and other hatcheries help in this effort, as well as different careers available with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The students interest peaked during the question and answer portion of his presentation with questions such as "What type of food do the fish eat?", "How do you know what to feed them?", and "Do you have sharks?". Mr. Hampton had a great day sharing what the U.S. Fish & Wildlife does best--conserving the nature of America.
