R5/R3 Multi-Refuge Impoundment Study Kicks Off
Northeast Region, May 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Twenty three refuges from across Regions 3 and 5 kicked off the field season for a new, multi-refuge impoundment management study. The Regional Refuge Biological Program, in cooperation with USGS, is leading and coordinating the project, which will evaluate refuge wetland management practices from a system-wide perspective. Each refuge has identified wetland management objectives, and contributed to study design and sampling protocols. This adaptive management project measures waterbird (waterfowl, shorebirds and wading bird), vegetation, and invertebrate response to impoundment drawdown treatments. Refuge staff will conduct wetland management treatments and data collection over the next 3 years, while USGS staff will provide analysis and reports. This project will help refuges establish goals and objectives related to waterbird and impoundment habitats. Contact: Contact: Joe Dowhan, Chief, Division of Natural Resources.
