Pittsford National Fish Hatchery Produces 85,000 Salmon for Vermont
Northeast Region, May 16, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Staff at Pittsford Hatchery have just concluded a busy spring stocking regime for the Vermont side of Lake Champlain .Over 84,000 Landlocked Atlantic Salmon weighing 27,000lbs and averaging over 8 inches in length were released at several sites. The staff's efforts included hauling 16 truckloads of fish over 2,200 miles around the eastern shore of Lake Champlain and its tributaries. Several releases were done at twilight at sites which historically posed a threat of bird predation. The remaining releases were monitored closely for any sign of bird predation on the stocked fish to help further enhance the restoration effort. The Pittsford National Fish Hatchery supports a fishery on Lake Champlain that generates 500,000 angler days and $54 million dollars annually by consistently producing high quality fish, efficiently.
