TETLIN: Local Residents Become Fire Wise
Alaska Region, June 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
2005 has been a great year for fire education on the Tetlin Refuge. We started out in late January with a teacher's "Fire in Alaska" workshop, focusing on ways to teach kids about the important role that fire plays in our ecosystem. The workshop contained a Fire Wise component (including home assessments) which really opened the eyes of some of the teachers. The teachers were required to use the ?Role Of Fire? materials with their classes, assess their own homes and report back to the group in early May. Our "re-gathering" in May revealed many clever innovations that teachers devised to incorporate the curriculum into their class and "lit a fire" under several of them to create defensible space around their homes. One teacher compiled and taught a month-long fire science unit in her elementary school class. (She also incorporated fire into an ongoing "Famous Naturalist" program that we have by including Ed Pulaski, Stephen Pyne and Wag Dodge as people studied.)

On June 1, we held a Fire Wise Open House at the refuge office, assisted by Tok State Forestry. Over 45 people attended, asked questions, received Fire Wise information and signed up for home assessments to be done by State Forestry staff. It was a highly successful, educational and fun evening for the community. Bit by bit, Tok is becoming more Fire Wise!

Many thanks to Pete Butteri,Tetlin NWR and Mark Eliot, State Forestry for making it all possible.
