Volunteers Help Visitors Draw Duck Stamp Designs
Northeast Region, March 26, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Visitors from all over Vermont migrated to the Silvio O. Conte Refuge Education Center at the Montshire for this year's Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design contest. The contest, which every state participates in, is modeled after the Service's Federal Duck Stamp Art competition. The Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest is part of an innovative educational curriculum that teaches students in grades K-12 about the importance of wetlands and waterfowl conservation. The day began with a waterfowl migration activity that required participants to get up and run or ?migrate? from wintering habitat, to stopover habitat, to breeding habitat. Throughout the game, certain imperative habitats were removed and then restored from the area ensuring participants understanding of the struggles waterfowl and other migratory birds encounter during migration as well as competition for food, water, shelter, and space. While carefully observing the brilliant green head of a mounted drake mallard, one participant paused momentarily to look around at others while they traced and colored their favorite native species of waterfowl. ?This is really fun? said the 8 year old student from Rutland, VT. Refuge Volunteers, Rick and Josh Hunt, provided everyone with guidance on what to look for and focus on when drawing, coloring, or painting a native duck, goose, or swan. ?My son and I are volunteering today because we want to help the refuge promote wetlands and waterfowl conservation? said Rick Hunt, local illustrator and visual artist. Refuge outreach specialist, Kevin Lowry, said ?Having passionate volunteers like Rick and Josh all day was a tremendous addition to the program. Both volunteers were presented with Service appreciation awards in front of the audience. A total of 143 visitors participated in the event. In April, Kevin Lowry was one of seven Vermont judges at Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge who observed artwork for authenticity and creativity.
