Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge fishing derby catches 71 anglers
Northeast Region, June 4, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Seventy-one anglers age 17 or younger participated in the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge 15th Annual Fishing Derby on June 4. The derby at Ringneck Marsh featured free fishing, a casting contest, and bags of special souvenirs that included an "o-fish-al ruler." Every young angler took home a door prize.

Trophies were awarded for the longest fish caught by anglers in three divisions: age 7 and under, 8 to 12, and 13 to 17. The age 7 and under division was an all-bullhead division; its catch ranged between 9 1/2 and 10 3/4 inches. The middle division made more difficult catches: two northern pike at 27 and 23 inches and one carp measuring 26 1/2 inches. The catch in the oldest division was more diversified: a 29 inch carp, 24 1/2 inch northern pike, and a 9 1/2 inch bullhead. All of the fish caught were released.

The derby was a registered Wal-Mart Kids All-American Fishing Derby, with added support from Tony Scime's Tackle and Variety and volunteers from the Friends of Iroquois NWR, Inc.
