Oaks to Wetlands Trail Selected for National Trails System
Pacific Region, June 3, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Secretary Gale Norton designated the Oaks to Wetlands Trail as part of the National Trail System. The National Trail System honors those trails that connect people and local resources and improve the quality of life. The Oaks to Wetlands Trail is located on the Carty Unit of Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. The Oaks to Wetlands Trail is 6 miles long and allows residents of Portland and Vancouver the opportunity to escape the urban hustle and bustle and enjoy nature. While walking this trail, visitors can enjoy wetlands, native flora, and waterfowl. While visiting the natural beauty of the Refuge, visitors can learn about the historical importance of the area at the Cathlapotle Plankhouse environmental education site. This replica Plankhouse represents the type of structure Lewis and Clark would have seen at Cathlapotle Village during their expedition. Cathlapotle Village is located on Carty Unit as well and is part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The Oaks to Wetlands Trail is unique because it gives visitors a rare opportunity to reconnect with both their natural and cultural past. Being designated as part of the National Trail System will increase the visibility of the trail and allow many new visitors to discover the history and beauty of the Oaks to Wetlands Trail.
