Journal Entry   Back Implementation Monitoring for the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Vehicle Barrier Southwest Region, May 10, 2005 Print Friendly Version AZ ES Tucson Office staff met with Organ Pipe Cactus NM staff to review installation of a vehicle barrier intended to eliminate illegal vehicle traffic from Mexico. We reviewed areas to the east and west of Lukeville along the border, including areas the NM has and will install the Normandy barriers. All work is being completed within the appropriate timeframes. The NM is implementing the proposed action, including the terms and conditions in the BO, as appropriate. Actual effects to soil and vegetation are less than had been expected, as described in the proposed action. There is less evidence of vehicle traffic in the areas of the existing barrier as compared to before the barrier was installed, which has decreased effects to vegetation. No breaching of the barrier has occurred. It is anticipated, as the BO explains, that there will be fewer effects to listed species habitat in the future from illegal crossings of the International Boundary in Organ Pipe Cactus NM.
