Cooperative Prescribed Burn Conducted Between Agassiz Refuge and Minnesota DNR
Midwest Region, May 5, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Agassiz National Wildlife Refuve and the Thief River Falls Wildife section of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources combined forces to jointly prescribe burn 3,700 acres. Both agencies shared a three mile mutual boundary that was difficult to protect if burning independant of one another. Burning together was a safer and more cost effective solution.

These two units combined have a 10 mile perimeter and have never been prescribed burned due to the inaccessibility. A 1.5 mile line was sheared through Aspens and upland meadows in March on the Minnesota DNR east boundary. Marshmasters and Bombardiers supported this line during the back firing. Acquisition of this type of equipment has allowed us to burn areas that would not have been possible without speciality tracked vehicles.

Aerial ignition was provided by a Minnesota DNR helicopter module, this allowed us to ignite inaccessible areas safely and eliminating interior hand ignition.
