Atchafalaya NWR's Step Outside Day-outdoor pursuits geared for physically and mentally handicapped
Southeast Region, May 14, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Some 650 youth enjoyed the 2nd annual Step Outside Day, May 14, at the Sherburne Complex in the Atchafalaya Basin of LA, which contains Atchafalaya NWR. The event was staged by the area's joint managers, LA Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Service. The day featured a big variety of outdoor pursuits geared especially for physically and mentally challenged youth, although all kids were welcome. The staff of SE LA Refuges provided pontoon boat tours, live animal displays, a duck decoy painting activity, and shuttle services around the grounds for disabled visitors. Other activities included archery, target shooting, birdhouse building, and much more. Neighboring Bayou Teche NWR was also present with a display about the Louisiana black bear.
