Journal Entry   Back Tarahumara frogs reproducing in Big Casa Blanca Canyon Southwest Region, May 6, 2005 Print Friendly Version On May 6, 2005, FWS and AGFD personnel released 53 large juvenile Tarahumara frogs and monitored previous releases in Big Casa Blanca Canyon, Arizona (the initial releases were in June 2004). Based on casual observations, which do not represent a rigorous survey, 26 Tarahumara frogs, 56 tadpoles, and nine egg masses were found in the canyon before the releases. The egg masses represent the first documented reproduction of Tarahumara frogs in Arizona since the species disappeared in 1983. We also observed several medium sized tadpoles that likely resulted from reproduction events in late summer 2004. This population may be well on its way to becoming self-sustaining.
