Ridgefield NWR Receives $91,000 for Restoration
Pacific Region, February 25, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Friends of Ridgefield NWR (Friends) received a $91,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) for use on Ridgefield NWR (Refuge). Friends members and Refuge staff collaborated on the creation of this multi-purpose, two year project. When the two year grant period is complete, the Refuge will have removed invasive plant species from over 1000 acres of Refuge lands. One of these exotic introduced plants is Ricefield Bulrush. Accidentally introduced to the Refuge in 1999, this plant is not found anywhere else in Oregon and Washington. With the help of this grant, the Refuge hopes to keep it that way. As invasive plants (including thistle, reed canarygrass, tansy ragwort, hemlock, etc.) are removed from the Refuge, each area will be restored. Riparian restoration will be used to reach out to local schools by enlisting students in tree planting activities. Along with invasive species removal and restoration, the grant will also provide for a volunteer coordinator to oversee the Ricefield Bulrush removal process. Without this grant, many riparian areas, wetlands, and pastures necessary for wintering dusky Canada geese would be overtaken by invasive weeds. This grant is hopefully the first in many to be received through the joint collaboration of Ridgefield NWR and the Friends of Ridgefield NWR
