Proposed Rule to Downlist Gila Trout Is Published
Southwest Region, May 11, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On May 11, 2005, the Service published a proposed rule to downlist Gila trout (Oncorhynchus gilae) from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). We also proposed a special rule under section 4(d) of the Act that would enable the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and the Arizona Game and Fish Department to promulgate special regulations in collaboration with the Service, allowing recreational fishing of Gila trout in specified locations, beginning on the date that the 4(d) rule becomes effective. We are opening the public comment period for the proposal to allow all interested parties to comment on and request changes to the proposed downlisting, as well as, the special rule. We will hold public hearings on this proposed rule on June 28, 2005, in Phoenix, Arizona and on June 29, 2005, in Silver City, New Mexico. Comments will be accepted until July 15, 2005.
