KENAI: Refuge Acquires New Land for Public Access
Alaska Region, May 24, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge recently acquired a 10 acre parcel of land off Funny River Road near Brown's Lake. The Refuge addition, at a cost of $27,500, provides access to the "high country" of the Refuge particularly popular with hunters and other Refuge users who travel to remote areas between Skilak and Tustumena Lakes using horses or mules. The property is immediately adjacent to Congressionally-designated wilderness and the long-standing Refuge boundary, but previous private ownership had impeded public access to the Refuge and the established pack trail. As future funding becomes available the Refuge hopes to improve the access road and develop a parking lot on the new addition. An added feature of the property is that it provides access to a stocked lake and increased fishing opportunities as well.
